Book Hedgehogs at The Bradford Police Museum!

Many of you may remember the adverts of twenty years ago that featured cartoon hedgehogs to promote road safety amongst young pedestrians, since then hedgehogs have been very close to our hearts. In the Bradford Police Museum, we have many popular products, our Book Hedgehogs are frequently a best seller amongst our visitors. This summer we welcomed many local children and their families to the museum. They had a wonderful time discovering our Victorian cells and court, but we were eager to have more to engage them with. This year we decided to begin a new craft activity: The Book Folding Workshop. Many of these children and their families took part in this exciting new workshop!

Each Book Hedgehog is a unique creation handmade by our very talented volunteer Bev Holroyd. We noticed how much children loved looking at our Book Hedgehogs and how many we sold to visiting ladies.

In the spring, Bev showed our Front of House Volunteers how to make the hedgehogs in varying sizes from preloved books. As one of these Volunteers, I attempted making a few with my five-year-old nephew, Robert. From this experience and his honest feedback, we started working on a way to offer hedgehog workshops as an extra paid activity for children when they visited the Museum with their families. Our Volunteer Guides happily gave a tour of the Gallery to our participants while Bev, Megan, and I excitedly set up the tables. It's hard to say who enjoyed themselves more with this activity; the visitors or us!

We look forward to continuing these Hedgehog workshops in October. To find out more information and to purchase tickets as an add on to your Museum Tour, please visit our website!
